The European Commission has approved the sale of UV-treated yellow mealworm larva powder as a novel food. Documents show that yellow mealworm larva powder can be added to foods such as bread, cakes, pasta products, processed potato products, cheese, and jam. In addition, manufacturers must indicate on the ingredient list of any products they sell that insect powder has been added.

  “Consumers can decide for themselves whether they want to consume insects (powder). Using insects as an alternative source of protein is not a new thing; in many parts of the world, insects are frequently eaten,” the European Commission said.
